The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected an amendment to eliminate $3.3 billion in military aid to Israel in a 104-314 vote, defeating the proposal brought by Republican Thomas Massie.
The vote exposed a split within Democratic leadership: 103 Democrats supported the measure, including Minority Whip Katherine Clark and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries opposed it, calling the amendment overly broad. Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Greg Casar also backed the aid cut.
The vote followed recent Democratic primaries in which incumbents supportive of Israel lost to progressive challengers critical of U.S. backing. A February Gallup poll found 65% of Democrats more sympathetic to Palestinians than Israelis, reflecting a broader shift in party sentiment.
