Heineken Italia and Arif launch water resilience project to protect Puglia aquifer

· Environment ITA

Heineken Italia and regional development agency Arif have launched a water protection initiative in Massafra, in Italy's southern Puglia region, aimed at shielding the Murgia aquifer from mounting supply pressures.

The 'Valore Acqua' project centres on reactivating a 10,000-cubic-metre storage basin fed by surface water. Once operational, the system is expected to save roughly 318,000 cubic metres of water annually, reducing draw on the underground reserves that sustain local agriculture and industry.

Completion is targeted for the first quarter of 2028. The intervention forms part of a broader push to bolster hydrological resilience in Puglia, where prolonged dry spells have strained groundwater supplies critical to the region's farming sector.
