Heat waves drive cardiac and infectious disease risks for elderly across Italy

· Health ITA

Intense summer heat is straining the cardiovascular health of older Italians, with experts warning that a combination of high temperatures and blood pressure medication is a leading cause of hospital admissions among the elderly. Aging reduces the hypothalamus's ability to regulate body temperature and diminishes the thirst response, leaving seniors prone to dangerous mineral imbalances, arrhythmias, and loss of consciousness from inadequate hydration.

Beyond cardiac strain, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has found that climate change is creating conditions favorable to infectious pathogens, expanding the reach of mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue and West Nile virus, as well as tick-borne diseases. Food safety is also a concern: specialists caution against raw seafood and unrefrigerated foods, noting that vibrio-related hepatitis cases emerged in Naples earlier this year.

Tropical nights are further disrupting sleep and circadian rhythms across age groups, compounding cardiac stress.
