Armed assailants killed at least 28 people during Friday prayers at a mosque in Sokoto state, northwest Nigeria, striking the village of Ungushi as worshippers gathered on 14 August. A local resident said around 30 people died, while police confirmed 28 fatalities.
Shamsuddeen Mai Akwai, secretary of the Kebbe local government council, identified the attackers as extremists from the Lakurawa group, said to have carried modern weapons. The Lakurawa group is considered affiliated with the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, which is active mainly in Mali and Niger.
The massacre followed the killing of four Nigerian soldiers in the Kebbe area earlier that same Friday, an incident residents said triggered the retaliatory assault on the village.
