Germany's Green party is considering legal challenges to block a scheduled July 10 Bundestag vote on a health insurance cost-cutting package, arguing the rushed legislative process denies lawmakers adequate review time. An urgent court application similar to a 2023 heating law challenge is among the options under review.
Health Minister Nina Warken introduced 278 pages of amendments to the draft legislation shortly before the planned vote. Green parliamentary group leader Katharina Dröge submitted a motion to remove the vote from the parliamentary agenda, while Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's premier Manuela Schwesig said she would not agree to shorten legislative deadlines in the Bundesrat.
Greens lawmakers have denounced the bill as a slash-and-burn austerity measure that will fail to sustainably stabilise health insurance contributions. The package aims to relieve statutory health insurers in 2027.
