BERLIN — German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig has proposed raising compensation for wrongful imprisonment to 100 euros per day, with the rate climbing to 150 euros for those held six months or longer, according to a draft reform circulated to state governments.
Under the plan, costs for food and housing during detention would no longer be deducted from compensation payouts. The application deadline for former inmates would double from one month to two, and claimants would receive up to a year to decide on the compensation amount.
The reform is estimated to cost state justice budgets nearly 2.5 million euros annually. States and interest groups have until mid-August 2026 to submit feedback on the draft legislation.
