Germany's heat pump market rebounded sharply in the first half of 2026, with manufacturers selling 194,500 units to wholesalers and installers, a 40% increase over the same period last year. The surge lifted total heating equipment sales to roughly 352,000 units, up 19% from the first half of 2025, as the industry recovers from a 15-year low of 627,000 units sold in all of 2025.
Gas boilers edged up 1% to 134,000 units, while oil and biomass systems both declined. Approved subsidy applications for heat pumps jumped to around 15,000 per week in late July, compared with fewer than 10,000 weekly in prior months. Martin Sabel, head of the Federal Association of Heat Pumps, attributed the momentum to growing awareness of fossil fuel risks and the success of a federal building efficiency subsidy programme.
The Federal Association of the German Heating Industry forecasts around 700,000 heating systems sold for the full year. More than 40% of Germany's 21.5 million heating systems remain outdated, suggesting significant replacement demand ahead.
