German author Christine Wunnicke has been awarded the 2026 Georg Büchner Prize, one of the most prestigious literary honours in the German-speaking world. The prize, conferred by the German Academy for Language and Literature, carries an endowment of 50,000 euros.

The award ceremony is scheduled for 24 October 2026 at the Staatstheater in Darmstadt. The prize is funded jointly by the federal government, the state of Hesse and the city of Darmstadt.

Wunnicke succeeds Ursula Krechel, who received the honour last year. The Büchner Prize has long served as a benchmark of literary achievement in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, recognising authors writing in German whose work has shaped the cultural landscape.
