German agricultural producer prices fell 13.9 percent in May 2026 compared with the same month a year earlier, marking the sharpest decline in more than eleven years. The drop accelerated from a 12.3 percent fall in April and an 8.8 percent decline in March. Month on month, prices dipped 1.5 percent.
Drops were broad-based across categories. Potatoes cost 53.5 percent less than a year earlier, while milk fell 25.3 percent and slaughter pigs 19.5 percent. However, eggs rose 13.6 percent, and tomatoes and cucumbers gained 28.2 and 21.5 percent respectively.
The producer-price slide contrasts with years of elevated consumer costs: food prices in Germany climbed 36.3 percent between 2020 and mid-2025, well above the 22 percent general inflation rate. Left-wing politician Ina Latendorf has called for a price-monitoring authority and a cap on food-corporate margins, along with scrapping value-added tax on staple foods.
