The Alliance of General Information Press (APIG), representing nearly 300 French daily newspapers, filed a complaint with France's Competition Authority on Tuesday over Google's deployment of AI-generated search summaries, demanding intervention to enforce commitments the tech giant made in 2022.
The dispute centers on Google's July 22 launch in France of AI Overviews and AI Mode, which generate summaries of search results using artificial intelligence. Links to news articles appear only at the bottom of these summaries, reducing traffic to publisher websites by an estimated 33% to 38%, according to France's media regulator Arcom.
APIG President Marc Feuillée, who also serves as general manager of Le Figaro group, said publishers are demanding fair remuneration for the use of their content. The Competition Authority previously fined Google 500 million euros in 2022 and an additional 250 million euros in March 2024 for failing to honor agreements with publishers on neighboring rights.
