Kenyan authorities have arrested four suspects following the deaths of 18 elephants in the Amboseli region, where animals were killed by cyanide poisoning after eating pesticide-contaminated tomatoes.
Sixteen carcasses were discovered between June 24 and July 31 in Amboseli National Park and surrounding areas, with two additional deaths reported since. The killings occurred in the Kimana sanctuary and Kuku Group ranch, home to more than 2,700 elephants. Among the victims was an 11-year-old elephant known as Genghis Khan. Investigators seized chemicals believed to have originated from a neighbouring country.
The poisonings come as conflicts between farmers and elephants intensify due to shrinking habitats across the region.
