Atle McAdam, a former Norwegian 400 metres hurdles champion, died Friday afternoon after his bicycle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a car on Gamle Mossevei near Gjersjøen in Nordre Follo, Akershus. Police received the first report at 17:08 and McAdam was pronounced dead at the scene with severe head injuries.
The driver, a woman in her 80s, has been formally charged and her vehicle seized for examination. Police lawyer Ingrid Skahjem said preliminary findings indicate the cyclist veered into the opposite lane before striking the front of the oncoming car.
McAdam, who represented IK Tjalve, dominated Norwegian 400m hurdles in the early 2000s, winning national titles in 2000, 2002 and 2004. As a 25-year-old in 2003, he set a national record of 50.67 seconds at Florø stadium, a mark that stood for a decade. He is survived by his wife and two children.
