Firefighters rescued a small dog from the San Francisco Bay after it was found swimming roughly half a mile offshore, ending a disappearance that began over the Fourth of July weekend.
The Menlo Park Fire Protection District mobilized trucks, a boat, and an airboat on 16 July after a 911 caller reported a dog entering the water near the Dumbarton Bridge in East Palo Alto. Rescuers located the animal using binoculars and a drone before pulling it from the bay. The dog had fled after being frightened by fireworks on 4 July, according to reports.
The animal was handed over to the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, which reunited it with its family.
