A fire on the technical roof of a new tower at Brussels' future Kanal-Centre Pompidou museum has caused significant water damage, forcing the architecture wing to remain closed at the museum's scheduled November opening.
The blaze broke out shortly after 18:00 on Monday in a rooftop technical room covering roughly 400 square metres. At least half the air-conditioning units on the technical roof caught fire, and firefighters' intervention caused extensive water damage throughout much of the new building. No one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported. The cause remains unknown.
Director Yves Goldstein confirmed the overall 28 November inauguration is not in jeopardy, though the Kanal Architecture section will not be ready in time.
