At least 11 people died and 19 others were injured when a fire swept through a children's care facility in Mohammadia, a suburb of Algiers, Algeria, early on Thursday.
The blaze broke out at a clinical site operated by the Childhood Foundation around 3:00 a.m. local time on 16 July. Among the injured, 10 suffered severe burns, two sustained respiratory injuries, and seven received treatment for minor wounds and anxiety. Five residents with special needs were evacuated to a safe location. Firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze at 06:50 local time. The cause remains unknown.
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the wounded at a burn clinic in Zeralda and a hospital in the capital. Algeria is enduring a severe heatwave, with nearly 1,000 fires recorded across the country in the past week.
