A major fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon at a car warehouse in Louvres, in the Val-d'Oise department, mobilising nearly 110 firefighters and prompting the precautionary closure of two runways at nearby Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport.
Dozens of vehicles were ablaze at the facility, located roughly 10 kilometres from the tarmac. The Val-d'Oise prefect attended the scene, while the smoke plume was visible as far as central Paris, some 20 kilometres away. The runway closures caused no disruption to air traffic, and the cause of the fire remains unknown.
Local authorities in the neighbouring commune of Fontenay-en-Parisis urged residents to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and switch off ventilation systems. Train services around Louvres were also suspended.
