FIFA is considering a proposal to expand the men's World Cup to 64 teams for the 2030 tournament, a move that would further widen the competition after the jump from 32 to 48 nations took effect this year.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the expansion could make sense and that a formal review would take place once the current tournament concludes. He described the 48-team format as entirely successful, noting that the new group-stage structure — 12 groups of four, with the top two and eight best third-placed teams advancing — has delivered competitive matches. Nine of Africa's 10 representatives reached the knockout stage.
The 2030 World Cup will be staged across six countries: Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, a spread that could accommodate additional qualifying slots.
