European equity markets traded unevenly on Tuesday as a surge in oil prices lifted energy stocks while broader indices struggled for direction. Brent crude futures jumped nearly 3 percent toward $90 a barrel, pushing BP, Shell and TotalEnergies up 1-2 percent and Eni higher by nearly 2 percent.
The pan-European STOXX 600 slipped 0.1 percent, with Madrid gaining around 0.5 percent while Frankfurt and Paris posted modest advances. Tech shares rose 1.1 percent, with ASML and ASM International among the top gainers. Stellantis fell 2.8 percent in earlier trading before recovering.
In fixed income, the spread between Italian and German government bonds narrowed to around 78 basis points, with the Italian 10-year yield easing below 4 percent. Gold climbed above $4,390 an ounce. Among individual movers, Spirax Group plummeted 10 percent and Legal & General declined after a UBS downgrade.
