The European Parliament approved €120.55 million in solidarity funding for Spain on Monday, compensating for devastating wildfires that swept across 16 of the country's 17 regions in 2025. The blazes killed eight people and caused an estimated €4.3 billion in damage.
Spain had already received a €30 million advance from the EU Solidarity Fund. The newly approved tranche will finance infrastructure restoration, debris clearance, temporary housing, and emergency services. In 2025, 393,079 hectares burned in Spain, accounting for 38 percent of the European Union's total scorched area.
Fire season pressures continue: 50,384 hectares have already burned in the first half of 2026. Spain is set to receive two European water-bombing aircraft and 185 firefighters from the Netherlands, Bulgaria, and Poland this summer.
