Nearly 70% of France is now subject to water use restrictions, with 67 departments in crisis status and more than 30,000 people facing tap water cuts across 80 municipalities, after the country endured its fifth heatwave since May. Ecological Transition Minister Monique Barbut said drinking water supplies are strained in 47 departments and will convene the hydrological monitoring committee Wednesday.

Across the continent, the Danube's receding waters have exposed sunken ships and cars in Hungary, Romania, and Croatia. Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar urged electricity conservation after low Danube levels forced the Paks nuclear plant to shut down, while Romania's military detonated rock formations to protect cooling water access for the Cernavoda nuclear facility. In Germany, residents can now walk across sections of the Rhine in Cologne and Düsseldorf, where unauthorized water extraction carries fines up to €50,000. German industry groups estimate climate-driven water supply costs could rise 30%, requiring up to €14 billion in additional treatment infrastructure investment by 2035.
