The Emilia-Romagna regional assembly has approved legislation regulating access to medically assisted suicide, making it the third Italian region — after Tuscany and Sardinia — to establish formal procedures for voluntary medically assisted death.
The centre-left majority backed the measure over opposition objections. Drawn from the "Liberi Subito" proposal put forward by the Luca Coscioni Association, the law sets four conditions: applicants must be capable of free and informed decision-making, have an irreversible illness, endure intolerable physical or psychological suffering, and be sustained by life-support treatment.
Each request will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary evaluation commission, with a non-binding opinion from the regional ethics committee (COREC). Local health authorities are responsible for providing the necessary medication and self-administration devices.
