Children's participation in sports and leisure clubs varies sharply across Danish municipalities, with 82 percent of children aged 3–14 active in Allerød and just 58 percent in Brøndby, according to new research from the University of Southern Denmark.
The Danmark i Bevægelse survey, covering 55,000 children and 143,000 older youth and adults, found that 73 percent of Danish children aged 3–14 participate in a club at least once a month on average. Municipalities such as Rebild, Varde, and Ringkøbing-Skjern also exceed 80 percent, while Brøndby, Glostrup, Høje-Taastrup, Lolland, Ishøj, Odsherred, and Næstved all fall at or below 65 percent. Nationally, 81 percent of children aged 9–11 take part in club activities monthly.
Regional preferences also emerged: football dominates in western Jutland municipalities like Ringkøbing-Skjern and Lemvig, gymnastics is most popular in Varde and Lemvig, and a quarter of children on the island of Mors play handball monthly.
