A widespread outbreak of Cyclospora cayetanensis has affected 31 US states, with 2026 case counts running above typical seasonal levels, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The intestinal parasite causes severe, explosive diarrhoea.
Michigan has been hardest hit, registering more than 1,500 infections against a usual annual tally of roughly 50. Ohio reported 177 cases and Illinois logged 141 as of early July. The CDC recorded 145 nationally between 1 May and 16 June, with 20 hospitalisations and no deaths. New York state, by contrast, has seen 470 cases since 1 May, broadly in line with normal figures.
Health authorities have not yet identified the source of the outbreak. Cyclosporiasis is typically food- or water-borne, and investigations are ongoing.
