China launches offshore sovereign bond futures in Hong Kong in third attempt

· Business CHNHKG

Five-year Chinese government bond futures began trading on the Hong Kong exchange on Monday, marking the first time such a product has been listed offshore and Beijing's third attempt to launch the initiative after a 2017 pilot and a cancelled 2023 plan.

Each contract carries a notional value of 500,000 yuan and is cash-settled with a trading fee of 5 yuan. The launch comes as more than 2 trillion yuan in mainland-traded sovereign bonds sit in the hands of foreign investors, underscoring demand for hedging tools.

The debut coincided with a broader package of cooperation measures announced by Hong Kong and mainland securities regulators, covering cross-border listings, yuan-denominated futures, ETF products and the internationalisation of financial institutions.
