Cairo rejects 'anti-Meloni' label for La7 as network posts record ratings

Urbano Cairo has rejected the suggestion that his La7 network operates an editorial line hostile to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, dismissing the characterization as unfounded during a presentation of the channel's autumn schedule in Milan.

Responding to remarks by news director Enrico Mentana, who had described the channel as "anti-Meloni," the Cairo Communication president said La7 has never given any government a free pass but insisted there are no "dangerous Bolsheviks" on the network. He noted that the current climate is little different from when Mentana joined in 2010. Cairo also confirmed he has rebuffed purchase offers for La7, saying he has no interest in selling.

The rebuttal comes amid strong commercial performance. La7 has recorded its best-ever viewership over the past four seasons, firmly established as Italy's third-most-watched channel with a 6.6 percent prime-time share. A revamped digital platform, La7 Play, will launch between October and November.
