Britney Spears has defended a highway stunt in which she stood through the sunroof of a moving Mercedes SUV on a busy Los Angeles freeway on Sunday, calling it unrepresentative of her everyday behaviour.
A man wearing a cowboy hat and sunglasses was driving the vehicle from Spears's Thousand Oaks home when, amid freeway congestion, the 44-year-old pop singer rose through the panoramic roof. Witnesses estimated she remained standing for about two minutes. Spears later wrote on Instagram that observers saw "two seconds of madness" in which she was "bowing to the gods", and offered an emotional explanation, saying she was "trying to get back all the years I missed". She also shared a photograph of a child curled on a bed as a metaphor for her past.
The incident follows a March 2026 traffic stop in California, after which Spears was charged with driving under the influence. She later pleaded no contest to a reduced reckless driving offence, receiving 12 months' probation, a fine, and mandatory DUI education.
