Brazil tightens rules on online betting ads with mandatory warnings and ban on illegal promotions

Brazil has imposed stricter regulations on online betting advertising, requiring operators to display prominent warnings about financial loss and addiction risks. The new rules, published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette on Friday, take effect on 17 July 2026.

All advertisements must include one of three messages designed by the Ministry of Finance: "Betting can cause addiction," "Betting makes you lose money," or "Betting is not an investment." The warnings must occupy at least 10% of the ad's total size. Commentators and analysts are barred from recommending specific bets during sporting events, and live strategies that encourage immediate wagering are prohibited.

Media outlets may not advertise unauthorized operators, with fines reaching 14 million reais for irregular advertising. The government has already blocked over 30,000 domains of non-compliant platforms and barred Bolsa Familia beneficiaries from online betting. Advertising firms must verify operators' authorization status before running campaigns.
