An elderly tourist is in critical condition after a bison charged and hurled him roughly 2.5 metres into the air at Yellowstone National Park on Friday evening. The incident occurred at the Bridge Bay Campground in Wyoming.
The man, who was walking with his grandson at the time of the attack, was struck by the bull's left horn at the hip before being launched skyward. Photographer Mike MacLeod and other bystanders drove the animal away by shouting and running toward it. The victim's grandson later said his grandfather sustained severe injuries and remains in critical condition.
The pair had been maintaining a distance of approximately 90 metres from the animal before the bison charged. It is the second bison-human incident at Yellowstone in recent weeks; a 12-year-old child was injured on 26 June.
