Belarus has placed the Euronews website on its national list of extremist materials, a move that restricts access and exposes readers to administrative penalties for storing or distributing its content. The decision, issued on 4 August by a district court in Horki, took immediate effect under Belarusian civil procedure rules.
Euronews condemned the ban as "obscure and unilateral". Editorial director Claus Strunz said the outlet had not been notified of the ruling and argued that a state labelling Euronews extremist reveals its fear of free information.
Exiled opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called the decision shameful and an attack on press freedom. Belarus had previously blocked the Euronews television channel in 2021.
