Australian teenage sprinter Gout Gout will miss the rest of the 2026 season, including the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, after sustaining a grade-three left hamstring tear while training in Brisbane. The injury, confirmed by MRI on Thursday, is a complete rupture typically requiring three to six months of rehabilitation.
The setback halts a breakthrough campaign for Gout Gout, who set the world under-20 200m record of 19.67 seconds at the Australian Athletics Championships in April. That mark also placed him second on the global 200m rankings this season. The sprinter, who won silver at the 2024 World U20 Championships, will now focus on recovery with a planned return in 2027.
His absence reshapes Australia's sprint outlook heading into the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this month, where Eddie Nketia will lead the squad.
