Asian and European markets rise as Japan economy expands 1.1%

Asian and European stock markets opened the week in positive territory, buoyed by data showing Japan's economy grew at an annualised rate of 1.1% in the second quarter despite a 1.2% decline in capital expenditure.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 closed up 0.74% at 69,220.25 points, though the broader Topix index slipped 0.31%. Kioxia Holdings surged 15%, while Trend Micro and NEC retreated sharply. Across the region, Seoul advanced 2.4%, Shenzhen rose 1.7%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 1.65%, where Alibaba gained over 2.5% after its open-source AI models surpassed three billion downloads. Mumbai was a notable outlier, dipping 0.5%.

In Europe, the Stoxx 600 climbed 0.2%, led by basic resources and technology stocks, as investors awaited remarks from European Central Bank chief economist Philip Lane. The yen strengthened against the dollar to 159.
