An Arizona toddler who was declared dead following a backyard pool accident in February was discovered breathing five hours later in a hospital morgue's cold room, authorities and medical records show.

First responders were dispatched to a Gilbert home around 5:30 p.m. on February 8, where the family had gathered to watch the Super Bowl. The child, identified as Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino, was taken to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. by Dr. Aryan Toosi. Body-camera footage captured Toosi dismissing officers' concerns about signs of life, telling them he "went to medical school for a reason." A transporter from the medical examiner's office later found the boy breathing and he was flown to another facility, where he recovered.

Gilbert police are recommending negligence charges against the parents, citing a strong marijuana odor and open doors at the home. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center called the incident "a heartbreaking situation" following an internal review. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is reviewing the case.
