Artificial intelligence is transforming work faster than it destroys jobs and will not precipitate a collapse in employment, according to a white paper published Wednesday by Adecco Group and Altermind. The study, "On the threshold: AI, the future of work and the rise of hybrid labor markets", found 1.9 million new AI-related positions were created between 2022 and 2025, though only a fraction of companies in the United States and Europe have integrated the technology at scale.
Adecco CEO Denis Machuel said AI is altering roles and tasks rather than eliminating positions, citing OECD data showing record-high employment three and a half years after ChatGPT's debut. However, Machuel acknowledged some firms use AI as cover for cuts driven by restructuring.
The findings contrast with layoff data: employers cited AI as responsible for nearly a quarter of U.S. job cuts this year, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Microsoft, HSBC, Amazon and Standard Chartered have all trimmed workforces this month amid AI-driven investment shifts.
